Stand up surfing is latest and newest craze to hit the surf spots of the UK. Originating back to Hawaii, this was how many think surfing was originally created. Imagine? They probably started out on a flattened log with a big branch and then just found themselves cranking one toward the beach, look out!

Now with the advent of modern materials we are able to revisit this sport with the benefit of lightweight and better designed boards and equipment.

Stand Up Paddle Boards are wider and thicker than normal surfboards because stability and volume is needed to give the possibility of balancing while paddling out through waves or cruising. Starter SUP boards measure typically between 29” and 32” wide up to 12 feet long, and 4.5” – 5.5” thick.

We at Escape were at first; like most sceptical, then fascinated and now engrossed in this ‘new/old’ form of surf riding. Now we are looking forward to the windless days, and small swells are no longer the disappointment that we so often felt in bygone seasons. If there are no waves then we are happy to go for a paddle around the coast and while we are checking out the scenery, flora and fauna, we know that we are giving ourselves a workout. This is the complete exercise machine, brilliant to build up your upper body and leg strength so when you finally get back to your surf, kite, or sail boards you’ll benefit from the extra body power you have gained. Many guys have forsaken their surfboards and are charging in all conditions, a full turnaround!

Unlike almost all other UK surf brands, Escape Surfboards custom shape Stand Up Paddle Boards and test them in our conditions before we commit the shape to production. We are constantly changing and modifying the models to get the best and most versatile SUP boards that will suit European surf and flat water conditions.

If you want to benefit directly from our experience we will build you a custom Stand up paddle board where you can either choose to let us make the board we think will suit you, your riding, and the conditions you will encounter. Or you can give us detailed drawings of the board you want. For economy, simplicity, lightweight, and a good cosmetic result we normally shape custom stand up paddle boards using EPS foam blank and finishing the laminate with glass reinforced epoxy resin. We are able to apply a colour scheme to the EPS foam so you can now choose the board’s graphic design.

We have of course our production boards which are made in the Far East and for light weight and strength these are constructed with an epoxy vacuum sandwich technique. This is a technique that Bill has used over many years when making custom sailboards. The finish on these boards is amazing; we know you’ll be stoked to own one of these boards.

Over the next pages we will show you the models of stand up paddle board we have available and also some photos to give some idea of the amount of fun we are having in developing the range.

The temlpate and hot wire to cut the blank. Then the blank is fitted with a stringer and glued. Once dry its ready to start shaping, now the outline is cut to size.
